ABOUT

STEVE OPPENHEIM is a public relations consultant, media coach and copywriter.  For almost thirty years he has specialized in creating targeted national media campaigns, book launches, communications programs, and press kits for authors and leaders in business, the nonprofit world, publishing, politics, medicine, sports, social issues and human rights.

Oppenheim has worked for a wide range of publishing clients over the years including HarperCollins; Simon & Schuster; Little, Brown and Company; Warner Books; William Morrow; Scribners; Ballantine; Wiley; Doubleday; Gotham; and many more.  From 2003 to 2005 he was Vice President and Director of Publicity of the G.P.Putnam's Sons and Riverhead Books imprints of Penguin Group (USA).  During that time Putnam led all publishing industry imprints in hardcover New York Times bestsellers by an overwhelming margin (nearly double the number achieved by any of its competitors).

An Emmy-nominated investigative news associate producer, Oppenheim began his career with a one-year stint at ABC's World News This Morning before moving on to five years in the newsroom at World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.  He also spent more than three years in the field, producing stories with the nationally syndicated news magazine program Inside Edition.  His television work has included one-on-one interviews, feature and profile pieces, hard news and in-depth investigative stories, as well as remote broadcasts and special assignments including ABC Network's coverage of the presidential primaries, caucuses and national political conventions during two election cycles.

With his background in hard news and investigative reporting Oppenheim has long specialized in books with serious news interest, embargoed titles and the like.  His publishing experience has included direct work with such authors as Bob Woodward, Michael Beschloss, James B. Stewart, David McCullough, Seymour Hersh, Valerie Plame Wilson, Bryan Burrough, Bob Schieffer, Martha Raddatz, Gen. Anthony Zinni (Ret.), Maureen Dowd, Arthur Gelb, Goldie Hawn, Daniel Libeskind, Alan Dershowitz, Walter Isaacson, Fred Kaplan, James Carville, Oliver North, Thomas P.M. Barnett, Sarah Ferguson, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, Margaret Thatcher, and scores more.

Oppenheim has also worked with a wide range of fiction authors including Patricia Cornwell, Tom Clancy, Amy Tan, Chang Rae Lee, Khaled Hosseini, Daniel Silva, Randy Wayne White, Joseph Kanon, Ken Follett, James McBride, Vikram Seth, Robert Mosley, Barry Eisler, Robert Parker, Kurt Vonnegut and many others.

As a media coach for publishers, top corporations, and not-for-profits Oppenheim prepares executives and staffers for all types of media scenarios.  Clients who have benefited from his training program include Booz Allen Hamilton, Banker's Trust Securities, Pew Charitable Trusts, Mothers and Others for a Livable Planet, American Red Cross of Greater New York (ARCGNY), Matthew Bender & Co., Christian & Timbers, Stamford Research Institute, Recruiting New Teachers, the National Geographic Channel and Gateway Computers.  For four years Oppenheim also co-conducted an annual media seminar at Yale University Law School for the Women's Campaign School.  The two-day training seminar received coverage from NPR, CNN, Good Morning America, Today on NBC and the Washington Post

Over the years Oppenheim has coached scores of authors including Oliver North, Sarah Ferguson, Marie Brenner, Tom Clancy, Caroline Kennedy, Barbara Rockefeller, Elsa Walsh, Peter Beinart, Isaac Hayes and many others.  His ability to position organizations and individuals for the best possible audience helps reporters and producers, journalists and editors automatically connect the dots between what's significant about the interview and information their readers, viewers and listeners need to know.

For the past five years Oppenheim has worked extensively in the nonprofit ecosystem, drawing attention to its unique issues, organizations and leaders.  In addition to launching a publishing imprint for m/Oppenheim Executive Search--publishing books by nonprofit leaders--he helped create INSIGHT, a one-on-one interview program with nonprofit leaders produced in collaboration with PBS stations around the country, and Nonprofit Report, a zoom webinar-based interview program exploring how nonprofits are navigating the challenges brought on by Covid-19.
